Top 5 Stories of 2023

This Warrensreport.com reporting is admittedly skewed towards the retail business and within that, the home furnishings sector, so it should come as a surprise which stories dominated my reporting and commentary over the past 12 months. If you haven’t figured it out yet, below are the Top 5 posts on this site, based on the number of views. It says a lot about where my head was…and where your eyes were. Hoping for 2024, we can all move on.

  1. Bed Bath & Beyond Changes Leadership at its Flagship Brand. A story from March on a last minute change at the top of the BBB division, this one surprised me as it was merely a step in the continued downward spiral of the brand and not exactly a defining moment. But hey, it was an attention-getter.
  2. Bed Bath & Begone: It’s Over…But it Didn’t Have to Be. This was my epitath to the brand and really summed up the big reasons why it failed — and why it could have still been saved even very close to the end. A quick read on a slow death.
  3. Bed Bath & Bananas. One in a long series of ongoing reports about the agonizing death march the company was on, this one from January when proper management could have snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. Also, one on my endless word-plays, which amused me…even if no one else.
  4. The Long Goodbye for Bed Bath & Beyond Begins. Another January downdate — the opposite of update — that looking back came at a time when good managers could have tried to keep the retailer alive. It didn’t happen.
  5. The Last Word on BBB…for Now. Obviously the headline was a lie, although I did give myself an out. This was from May, when all that was left were some stores and plenty of tears. Funny how the latter continued well after the former were gone.

That was the Top 5 and there were a few more BBB stories before the subject changed, to remembering May Company’s David Farrell, JCPenney, HomeGoods, ABC Home, Macy’s, Bloomingdales and assorted other heroes and villians in the business. You can search them all out on this site…if you’ve got the time.

Merry happy holidays…and onto what we all hope will be more peaceful 2024.
