Big national retailers are continuing to roll out smaller stores, the latest being Whole Foods which owner Amazon has been retooling since the day it bought the grocery chain in 2017. In the meantime, the small news out of Macy’s this week was that it would be closing as many as 150 old-line legacy stores and focusing more of its efforts on its smaller footprint formats. You can’t blame these companies for looking at new models if the old ones aren’t working but I’m not convinced smaller is necessarily better. Maybe the recent news that both Walmart and Target plan big rounds of new full-size stores is a reversal of this trend? Maybe.
