When it opened 20 years ago HD Buttercup was alike anything the home furnishings industry had even seen before. A giant 100,000-square-feet-plus showroom it was almost exclusively composed of leased departments from a who’s who of higher end furniture and decor brands housed in a historic former bakery building. In the two decades since it morphed its merchandising format, as well as its management and even ownership and now it is closing. It blamed tariffs and the dismal market for home furnishings products, which is true, but one has to think if its original impresario, ex-ABC Home whiz kid Evan Cole was still running it, the outcome might have been different.
