
When people talk about the death of retailing, they usually point to all the store closings and vacancies. And make no mistake about it, they are plentiful. But they only tell part of the story. Just as discounters supplanted department stores as the prime retail engines in the back half of the last century, online and store pick-up distribution centers are taking the place of retail selling spaces in the first quarter of this century. It’s a big transformation but without understanding this key point, any discussion of the retailing business is just plain Stupid.
