If you’re trying to keep track of which retailers have started reopening and which ones are still waiting out the coronavirus pandemic a little longer, you’ve come to the right spot. We’re updating this scorecard as new information is released, so check it out. This represents everything we know as of Monday morning, May 11.
Keep in mind: All of this activity is set against a medical and safety landscape where very few – if any – states are meeting federally suggested guidelines for reopening, even as the president contradicts himself and applauds the restart. In some areas, both the number of cases of COVID-19 and the death rates are increasing.
Likewise, despite some high-profile protests in some areas, polls show most Americans are not ready to go out in public again. In a new survey by the Washington Post and the University of Maryland, 67% of the respondents said they would be uncomfortable shopping at a retail clothing store and more than three-quarters said they would be uncomfortable eating at a sit-down restaurant. The results are similar in both states with looser restrictions and those with stricter rules.
Nevertheless many American retailing companies seem to be well into their reopening processes. Here’s a rundown of some of the major national retailers and their operational status. Openings cut across most merchandising classifications, with apparel and fashion goods the one area where most stores remain closed.
Note: There may be some local anomalies impacting these status reports and as this situation remains incredibly fluid, things may have changed since this list was compiled. This list does not include stores that have remained open and some stores listed as closed may be offering curbside pick-up.
Abercrombie & Fitch (Hollister): Reopening “select stores” of its 1,049 locations.
American Eagle (Aerie): 207 stores have reopened.
Apple: Stores in Idaho, South Carolina, Alabama and Alaska opening next week. Rest of 272 U.S. stores remain closed.
Ascena (Ann Taylor, Loft, Lane Bryant): All stores closed.
At Home: “About half” of 218 stores opened by May 1.
b8ta: 2 stores, in Houston and Austin, reopened May 4.
Bassett Furniture: 43 of 66 corporate stores now open, 19 more by week of May 18.
Bed Bath & Beyond (Christmas Tree Shops, World Market Cost Plus): About 20 BBB and CTS stores to open by May 22, all other stores closed through at least May 30 (BuyBuyBaby and Harmon Beauty divisions remained open).
Belk: Stores in South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Arkansas and Oklahoma of its 293 total opened on May 1. North Carolina stores opening May 11.
Best Buy: 200 of its 997 stores allow in-store consultation as of May 1. In-home services restarted in some states.
Blue Mercury: 115 of 171 stores open by May 15.
Bob’s Discount Furniture: 4 stores now open, 18 more planned to reopen week of May 11.
Boscov’s: 2 Pennsylvania stores have reopened.
Burlington: 14 stores in Texas opening May 15.
Capri (Michael Kors, Versace, Jimmy Choo): All stores closed “until approximately June 1.”
Columbia: 31 stores open as of May 15.
Crate & Barrel: All stores closed.
Buckle: All stores closed.
Carter’s: Reopening “some of our (860 U.S.) stores this week.”
Casper: All stores closed.
Chico’s (Soma, White House Black Market): All stores closed.
The Children’s Place: All stores closed.
Christopher & Banks: “Majority” of 453 stores opened by 4, balance by June.
Claire’s: All stores closed.
The Container Store: All stores closed.
David’s Bridal: “Select” stores opened week of April, balance of 300 open by appointment beginning June 1.
Dick’s Sporting Goods: 252 stores in 21 states are open as of May 4.
Dillard’s: About 140 of its 285 stores opening starting May 5, 116 additional stores planned to open week of May 17.
DSW: All stores closed.
Eddie Bauer: 3 stores in Texas, Tennessee and Montana have opened, other stores will reopen on a case by case basis.
Express: A few GA and SC stores open, 300 to open by May 25.
Five Below: “Over” 117 opened by last week of April, “many more” by mid-May, majority of its 750 stores by early June.
Foot Locker: Begin reopening “slowly and on a rolling basis.”
GameStop: Some stores in Georgia and South Carolina are being opened, rest of 4,400 remain closed.
Gap (Old Navy, Banana Republic): 800 stores to reopen “this month.”
Guess: All stores closed.
H&M: All stores closed.
Hobby Lobby: Some of its 900 stores “gradually” reopening.
