Tears for Sears

If you still want to see a Sears or Kmart store, I suggest you do so sooner rather than later. According to very informed sources who are tracking the ongoing store closings at both brands — each owned by Eddie Lampert’s Transformco — there are now just 94 locations left: 60 Sears and 34 Kmarts. It’s a sad, sad, sad and Stupid end to what were once great retail operations.

My problem is not that an owner is trying to make money. That’s how business works. It’s more that Lampert keeps telling people his goal is to save his retail business and the jobs they represent. AND the business press that has believed this fairy tale for close to two decades.

Eight months ago there were twice as many Sears and Kmart locations. Eighteen months there were 450. The longest going-out-of-business sale in American business history continues…but not for much longer.

Sigh.
