It’s just sold off its UK operation. It’s out of Japan and Brazil and the rest of Europe too. Increasingly Walmart is becoming a North American retailing company that, with the exception of its Chinese stores, is hunkering down in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. This retreat from the rest of the retailing world is being driven by the company putting as many resources as possible into its e-commerce business as it tries to play catch-up with Amazon. It’s not necessarily a Stupid strategy but it just shows how hard it is to export the American brand of retailing to the rest of the world.
Here’s my take on Walmart’s America First strategy: https://www.forbes.com/sites/warrenshoulberg/2021/02/22/with-asda-sale-is-walmart-moving-to-america-first-or-america-only/?sh=4b1419891bde
