What do insects that only appear every 17 years — but show up in the trillions — have in common with hundreds of millions of shoppers? They are both about to swarm, coming out of hibernation (self-imposed or otherwise) and playing a big role in our times for the next few months. The insects — cicadas — will only be around for a few weeks in selected parts of the country but the shoppers — consumers hitting stores again — will be around much longer and in many more places.
