
Translating a retail concept from one continent to another is a tricky proposition and there are plenty of examples of both U.S. and foreign companies that fell flat on their faces when they tried to export themselves. But two chains out of Asia — Miniso and Daiso — are proving it can be done and they are making it work with a new format that takes the dollar store model and turns it on its side with an emphasis on impulse items mixed with household basics, toys, decor and some unexpected merchandising choices. If these two are not on your retail radar you need to dial it up a few notches.
