The latest casualty in the sad, sad meltdown of two of what were among America’s greatest retailers — Sears and Kmart — is the news that the 34th Street store in Manhattan with the big “K” over the front door is closing. It was a rough store to shop with awkward layouts and multiple floors but the location was impeccable: catty-corner to Macy’s, an anchor to the Herald Square shopping district and direct access to Penn Station and its hundreds of thousands of commuters.  What’s more it represented a bold and inspired move when Kmart first opened it in the mid-1990s, an urban location for a big box chain. Very few others were on to this strategy then, though now it’s quite common.

Indeed, it is a sad story but it’s also a Stupid one. In fact, far more Stupid than sad, which is saying something. Here’s my take from Forbes.com: https://www.forbes.com/sites/warrenshoulberg/2020/02/10/the-latest-kmart-closing-34th-street-in-manhattan/#22852f0f5c73
