Sometimes companies need to make decisions that aren’t entirely centered around their bottom lines. Case in point is General Electric’s decision last week to sell its lighting division, marking its complete departure from the household consumer products field. At one time, GE was a powerhouse in major appliances, small appliances and some consumer electronics categories like radios in addition to light bulbs. Now they are all gone…as is the company’s connection with consumers and American households. The company says it wants to focus on industrial categories like aviation, engines and health care technology. All good businesses but something has been lost by GE not being in products most of us can relate to. I think it’s just Stupid.
