The incredible shrinking act that has been Sears and Kmart over the past decade continues…even as the end appears to be in sight. After the last officially announced round of closings late last year, Transformco, the Eddie Lampert-owned holding company that bought the two brands out of bankruptcy in early 2019, said it had reduced its total store count to 186 but my new research shows a number about 11% lower. And it could be much lower if many of the pandemic-closed stores never reopen.
Here’s some new math from a report I did for Forbes.com. Yes, the situation is Stupid, but even more so, it’s sad…oh so sad. https://www.forbes.com/sites/warrenshoulberg/2020/06/02/there-are-fewer-sears-and-kmart-stores-left-than-you-think/#146df2fb4084
