What should retailers with too much space and not enough shoppers do? British department store chain John Lewis has come up with an interesting solution: it is building rental apartments around its stores and properties, as many as 10,000 when it’s done. And here’s the kicker: they can come furnished with John Lewis home furnishings products, a great way for a retailer to introduce new customers to its offerings. I think this is a pretty Smart solution to a big retail problem.
